Rocester 5 Boldmere St. Michaels 2

Three goals inside the opening fifteen minutes sent Rocester on their way to a handsome victory over Boldmere St. Michaels on Saturday.

It took the Romans just 90 seconds to open their account, and it was former Boldmere player Tobias Salmon who made his old club suffer. Josh Butler’s chipped free kick into the area fell to James Curley, his shot cannon off a defender to Salmon and his firmly struck drive found the net despite valiant efforts to block it on the line.

Rocester’s grip tightened nine minutes later when a quickly-taken free kick sent Salmon racing into the area. He pulled the ball back from the left into the six-yard box where Curley arrived to direct it past Adam Jenkins for number two.

The dream start got even better when Salmon raced clear onto a ball from midfield, and confidently slotted a third goal past Jenkins as the goalkeeper came out to narrow the angle.

Josh ButlerIt all looked too easy for the rampant Romans as Jenkins denied them a fourth goal with a fine save from Shawn Salmon’s powerful drive, but the visitors rolled their sleeves up and began to take advantage as Rocester took their foot off the pedal.

Lee Osborne gave the Mikes hope with a clinical finish on 32 minutes after he was left unmarked at a free kick, and as Rocester were forced onto the back foot they had a couple of narrow escapes, most notably when Josh Butler headed Jamel Fuller’s looping header off the line with Richard Froggatt beaten.

The Romans were glad to hear the half time whistle, but they regained their grip just before the hour with a crucial fourth goal. The move stemmed from a superb piece of defending inside the Rocester area by Dan McLeod, who made a finely-timed tackle before feeding the ball forward to Butler. He in turn sent it on to Matty Redshaw who had replaced Tobias Salmon during half time, and the youngster did the rest with a devastating burst of pace and an equally impressive finish as he cut inside from the left.

Shawn Salmon then added his name to the scoresheet when he chased down Tyrell Shannon-Lewis’s pass to force his way past Jenkins, who had come way out of his area. He then coolly picked his spot beyond two covering defenders into the empty net.

Dan McLeod moves in to tackleRocester were out of reach, but Boldmere kept going to the finish with Ricky Baker forcing a fine save from Froggatt before Osborne claimed his second goal of the game deep into stoppage time with a quality finish from the edge of the area.
