Pre-Season Friendly

Rocester Reserves 2 Stretton Eagles 0

Rocester fielded a number of players with first team experience including Dave Shaw, Rory Maxwell, Colin Fletcher and Mark Ruddock against a lively young Stretton Eagles side who will no doubt make their presence felt in Division One of the Staffordshire County Senior League this season.

The visitors had enjoyed much the better of the opening 45 minutes but right on the stroke of half time a neat move between Fletcher and Maxwell resulted in Gavin Reynolds slamming the ball into the net to give the Romans a lead that in truth they didn't deserve.

After the break Rocester changed their system to a more recognisable 4-4-2 and played with more urgency and fluency, with Rory Maxwell in particular beginning to hit some form.

Although the Eagles continued to give a good account of themselves Rocester's greater experience and strength eventually began to tell.

Fletcher and Dave Shaw might have done better with reasonable chances before Maxwell provided an opening for John 'Johnno' Shaw to nudge a second Rocester goal off the post from six yards in the 78th minute.

Manager Steve Swanwick said afterwards: "We did much better second half. It was a tough game as they were a good side, but from our point of view we've won two tough friendlies without conceding a goal, which sets us up nicely for Saturday's opening league match at Foley."
