Sunday 4th May 2008 Under 9s - Mid-Staffs Junior Football League - Division One. Game 1 - Rocester Elkes Eagles 6 Longton Bulls 1 The last three games of the season and we faced a big task of winning all three by a clear six goals to win the league - a very big task!!!! We entered this two game day also with the bare minimum of seven players due to family commitments. The team set off really determined and soon had a three goal cushion at half time. Their tails were up and they were looking for more. Goals came from Sam Chilvers (2), Will Hepburn (2), Jordan Hibberd (first outfield goal) and a super solo effort from Harry Cooper. We did leak one goal but got a massive 6-1 win to boost confidence in the task. Game 2 - Rocester Elkes Eagles 2 Penkridge Juniors 3 The team went into this game with confidence sky high. Two games to go and two wins needed - still a huge ask. We set off in a great way with Sam opening the scoring and converting another before half time. The danger was that with no substitutions the team would tire in heavy conditions. A couple more chances came our way but then Penkridge scored a very well taken goal. No need to panic as 2-1 would do. Then the last few minutes the team really tired and penkridge scrambled an equaliser. We now needed to score and the team looked for a route to goal. The early zip was now not there and the inevitable came when Penkridge scored a third goal. Full time and the result we didn’t want - a defeat to hand the title to Eccleshall Eagles. A big congratulations to them. There were a couple of very upset players at the end but what the team must take from this is that it was their first season as a team in a league, and they have played 17 times (one to go ) only lost 4 and scored 46 goals!! This is a tremendous achievement and they should all be very proud of themselves finishing as Runners up, I certainly know I am. Man of the match game 1 - Kyle Backhouse Man of the match game 2 - James Thorley Team Marcus Bloor; Kyle Backhouse; Jordan Hibberd; James Thorley; Sam Chilvers; Harry Cooper; Will Hepburn. Well done, and lets look forward to some fun in the tournaments. Darren Cooper |
