Under 13s - Burton Junior Football League
Trent Trophies Division One.
Rocester Elkes Eagles 1 Stretton Eagles 2
Rocester met Stretton Eagles in a top of the table clash that would decide which of the two teams would win the league.
Rocester made a good start to the game and scored an important early goal within minutes of kick-off when Niall Dawkins passed a ball though to Steve Whitehall, who ran through to score.
Rocester continued to pressurize and forced a number of corners, but were just not able to make use of the ball in the area and good opportunities were wasted.
Despite kicking up-hill in the first half, Rocester remained in control but unfortunately a momentary lapse of concentration allowed Stretton to pick the ball up in midfield as Rocester had pushed up and a Stretton player lobbed the keeper to equalise just before half time.
The second half saw Rocester continue to create numerous chances and have several shots at the Stretton goal that were saved by the valiant efforts of the keeper.
With 7 minutes remaining and Rocester needing a win to stand a chance of winning the league, we gambled by replacing a defender with a striker going to 3 defenders at the back. It didn’t pay off though and Stretton won the ball on the left wing and crossed the ball into the 18-yard box and score the winning goal.
In the last few minutes, Rocester had a few more chances but the shots went wide of goal and the ball was out of play as much as it was in play in the remaining minutes.
Man of the Match today was Niall Dawkins who ran his socks off in both halves but unfortunately wasn’t able to score.
With Runners-Up place secured, Rocester have one league game remaining next weekend and a Cup-Final to play on 11th May.
