Sunday 29th November 2007
Rocester Elkes Eagles Under-8s played in the Christmas Tournament at the JJB Soccerdome in Derby on the 29th December.
Rocester started well in the first game when they played Field Lane and soon scored 2 goals - both by Corey McLaughlin. Laurence wootton scored a third to seal a 3-0 win.
Ashbourne were next to play the impressive Eagles and they proved to be a more stubborn team although they didn' t offer a lot up front. Eagles scored 2 goals; Josh Berry scored from 5 yards and Ed Farnley from 15 yards with a thunderbolt.
Belper town were the next opponents and took an early lead after only 1 minute. This spurred Eagles on and they soon equalised when the impressive Josh Berry took a good pass off the tireless Laurence Wootton and placed the ball into the corner from 6 yards.
Next to play Rocester were Belvedere Park. Corey McLaughlin was on fire in this game scoring four goals and the ever improving Josh berry scoring again for a comfortable win.
Sinfin Sharks, who were the only other unbeaten team left in the division and probably the strongest, were next to play Rocester. Sinfin took an early lead but Eagles soon replied with a goal from Laurence Wooton, but then Gabriel Wild came out of his area and was unlucky to concede a penalty which Sinfin scored from. Josh Berry again rescued Eagles with another well taken goal, then Laurence Wooton and Corey McLaughlin scored a goal each to make the final score 4-2.
New Boulton were the last fixture in the league and they were steam-rollered by Rocester 4-0 and never looked like troubling the defence which gave the solid Harley Turner a chance to get forward and score 2 goals. Josh Berry and Daniel Clayton also found the net.
A great performance all round by a team who have not had league football for 5 weeks!
The semi final, for some reason, was delayed for 70 minutes and I think this went against us. Eagles played Allestree Juniors and lost 4-0 but never really looked like they were in it. Sour grapes maybe, but Eagles looked unstoppable in the league.
Still, it was a great day out for the families and seeing different opposition proved to manager Jim Hulme that all the effort in training is worth while when you see them perform like they did.
The team; Gabriel Wild, Ed Farnley, Harley Turner, Laurence Wootton, Daniel Clayton, Joshua Berry, Corey Mclaughlin.
Goal scorers; Corey Mclaughlin 7, Joshua Berry 5, Laurence Wootton 4, Harley Turner 2, Ed Farnley 1, Daniel Clayton 1.
Man Of The Match; Laurence Wootton.
